Objectifs travaillés

Exercice 1

Déterminer les limites des fonctions ci-dessous en $ - \infty $ et en $ +\infty $ :

  1. $ f\left( x\right) =x^{3} - 2x^{2}+4x - 1 $
  2. $ g\left( x\right) =\dfrac{x^{2} - 1}{x^{2}+1} $
  3. $ h\left( x\right) =\dfrac{x - 1}{x^{2}+4x+4} $
  4. $ k\left( x\right) =\dfrac{x^{3}+1}{x^{2} - 1} $
  5. $ p\left( x\right) =\dfrac{x - 1}{x+1}+\dfrac{x+1}{x - 1} $

Exercice 2

Déterminer les limites des fonctions ci-dessous lorsque $ x $ tend vers $ +\infty $ :

  1. $ f(x)=x \text{e}^{ x } $
  2. $ g(x) = x + \text{e}^{ x } $
  3. $ h(x) = \text{e}^{ x } + x^2 - 1 $

Exercice 3

Soit la fonction $ f $ définie sur $ ] - \infty ;1\left[ \ \cup \ \right] 1;+\infty [ $ par :

$ f\left( x\right) =\dfrac{3x - 1}{x - 1} $

Déterminer les limites de la fonctions $ f $ aux bornes de son ensemble de définition (il y a 4 limites à calculer).

La courbe représentative de la fonction $ f $ admet elle une asymptote horizontale ? une asymptote verticale ?

Exercice 4

On considère la fonction $ f $ définie sur $ \mathbb{R} $ par $ f(x)=x^3 - x^2 - x+1. $

  1. Étudier le sens de variation de la fonction $ f $.
  2. Calculer les limites de la fonction $ f $ lorsque $ x $ tend vers $ - \infty $ et lorsque $ x $ tend vers $ +\infty $.
  3. Dresser le tableau de variation de la fonction $ f $ en y faisant apparaître les limites.

Exercice 5

Déterminer les limites suivantes :

  1. $ \lim_{x\rightarrow 2}\dfrac{x^{2} - 4}{x - 2} $
  2. $ \lim _{x\rightarrow 0}\dfrac{x^{3} - x}{x^{3}+x} $
  3. $ \lim _{x\rightarrow 1}\dfrac{\sqrt{x} - 1}{x - 1} $

Exercice 1

  1. En $ - \infty $ et en $ +\infty $, on a une forme indéterminée du type « $ +\infty - \infty $ » ; on lève l'indétermination en mettant $ x^3 $ en facteur :

    $ \begin{aligned}f\left( x\right) &=x^{3} - 2x^{2}+4x - 1\\ \\ &=x^{3}\left( 1 - \dfrac{2}{x}+\dfrac{4}{x^{2}} - \dfrac{1}{x^{3}}\right) \end{aligned} $

    Limite en $ - \infty $ :
    $ \begin{aligned}\lim_{x\rightarrow - \infty } - \dfrac{2}{x}&=0\\ \\ \lim_{x\rightarrow - \infty} \dfrac{4}{x^{2}}&=0\\ \\ \lim_{x\rightarrow - \infty} - \dfrac{1}{x^3}&=0\\ \end{aligned} $
    Donc, par somme :
    $ \begin{aligned}\lim_{x\rightarrow - \infty }1 - \dfrac{2}{x}+\dfrac{4}{x^{2}} - \dfrac{1}{x^{3}}&=1\end{aligned} $

    Par ailleurs :
    $ \begin{aligned}\lim_{x\rightarrow - \infty } x^3 &= - \infty \end{aligned} $

    Donc, par produit :
    $ \begin{aligned}\lim_{x\rightarrow - \infty }f(x) &= - \infty \end{aligned} $

    Limite en $ +\infty $ :
    $ \begin{aligned}\lim_{x\rightarrow +\infty } - \dfrac{2}{x}&=0\\ \\ \lim_{x\rightarrow +\infty} \dfrac{4}{x^{2}}&=0\\ \\ \lim_{x\rightarrow +\infty} - \dfrac{1}{x^3}&=0\\ \end{aligned} $
    Donc, par somme :
    $ \begin{aligned}\lim_{x\rightarrow +\infty }1 - \dfrac{2}{x}+\dfrac{4}{x^{2}} - \dfrac{1}{x^{3}}&=1\end{aligned} $

    Par ailleurs :
    $ \begin{aligned}\lim_{x\rightarrow +\infty } x^3 &= +\infty \end{aligned} $

    Donc, par produit :
    $ \begin{aligned}\lim_{x\rightarrow +\infty }f(x) &= +\infty \end{aligned} $
  2. En $ - \infty $ et en $ +\infty $, on a une forme indéterminée du type « $ \dfrac{ +\infty }{ +\infty } $ » ;
    on lève l'indétermination en mettant $ x^2 $ en facteur, puis en simplifiant par $ x^2 $  :

    $ \begin{aligned}g\left( x\right) &=\dfrac{x^{2} - 1}{x^{2}+1}\\ \\ &=\dfrac{x^{2}\left( 1 - \dfrac{1}{x^{2}}\right) }{x^{2}\left( 1+\dfrac{1}{x^{2}}\right) }\\ \\ &=\dfrac{1 - \dfrac{1}{x^{2}}}{1+\dfrac{1}{x^{2}}}\end{aligned} $

    Limites en $ - \infty $ et en $ +\infty $ :
    Avec un raisonnement similaire à la question a. :

    $ \begin{aligned}\lim _{x\rightarrow \pm \infty }1 - \dfrac{1}{x^{2}}=1\\ \\ \lim _{x\rightarrow \pm \infty }1+\dfrac{1}{x^{2}}=1\\ \end{aligned} $

    Donc par quotient :

    $ \begin{aligned} \lim _{x\rightarrow \pm \infty }g\left( x\right) =1\end{aligned} $
  3. En $ - \infty $ et en $ +\infty $, on a encore une forme indéterminée du type « $ \dfrac{ \infty }{ \infty } $ » ;
    on lève l'indétermination en mettant $ x $ en facteur au numérateur et $ x^2 $ en facteur au dénominateur, puis en simplifiant :
    $ \begin{aligned}h\left( x\right) &=\dfrac{x - 1}{x^{2}+4x+4}\\ \\ &=\dfrac{x\left( 1 - \dfrac{1}{x}\right) }{x^{2}\left( 1+\dfrac{4}{x}+\dfrac{4}{x^{2}}\right) }\\ \\ &=\dfrac{1 - \dfrac{1}{x}}{x\left( 1+\dfrac{4}{x}+\dfrac{4}{x^{2}}\right) }\end{aligned} $

    Limites en $ - \infty $ et en $ +\infty $ :
    $ \begin{aligned}\lim _{x\rightarrow \pm \infty }1 - \dfrac{1}{x}&=1\\ \\ \lim _{x\rightarrow \pm \infty }1+\dfrac{4}{x}+\dfrac{4}{x^{2}}&=1\\ \\ \lim _{x\rightarrow - \infty }x&= - \infty\\ \\ \lim _{x\rightarrow +\infty }x&=+\infty \end{aligned} $

    Le numérateur tend vers $ 1 $ et le dénominateur tend vers $ \pm \infty $ (par produit).
    Par conséquent, par quotient : $ \lim_{x\rightarrow \pm \infty }h(x)=0 $
  4. On procède comme précédemment et on obtient :
    $ \begin{aligned}k\left( x\right) &=\dfrac{x^{3}+1}{x^{2} - 1}\\ \\ &=\dfrac{x^{3}\left( 1+\dfrac{1}{x^{3}}\right) }{x^{2}\left( 1 - \dfrac{1}{x^{2}}\right) }\\ \\ &=\dfrac{x\left( 1+\dfrac{1}{x^{3}}\right) }{1 - \dfrac{1}{x^{2}}}\end{aligned} $

    Limite en $ - \infty $ :

    $ \begin{aligned}\lim _{x\rightarrow - \infty }x\left( 1+\dfrac{1}{x^{3}}\right) &= - \infty \\ \\ \lim _{x\rightarrow - \infty }1 - \dfrac{1}{x^{2}}&=1\end{aligned} $

    donc par quotient $ \lim_{x\rightarrow - \infty }k(x)= - \infty $

    Limite en $ +\infty $ :

    $ \begin{aligned}\lim _{x\rightarrow +\infty }x\left( 1+\dfrac{1}{x^{3}}\right) &=+\infty \\ \\ \lim _{x\rightarrow +\infty }1 - \dfrac{1}{x^{2}}&=1\end{aligned} $

    par quotient $ \lim_{x\rightarrow + \infty }k(x)= + \infty $
  5. De même :
    $ \dfrac{x - 1}{x+1}=\dfrac{x\left( 1 - \dfrac{1}{x}\right) }{x\left( 1+\dfrac{1}{x}\right) }=\dfrac{1 - \dfrac{1}{x}}{1+\dfrac{1}{x}} $

    $ \dfrac{x+1}{x - 1}=\dfrac{x\left( 1+\dfrac{1}{x}\right) }{x\left( 1 - \dfrac{1}{x}\right) }=\dfrac{1+\dfrac{1}{x}}{1 - \dfrac{1}{x}} $

    Alors :

    $ \begin{aligned}\lim _{x\rightarrow \pm \infty }\dfrac{x - 1}{x+1}=1\\ \\ \lim _{x\rightarrow \pm \infty }\dfrac{x+1}{x - 1}=1\end{aligned} $

    et par somme $ \lim_{x\rightarrow \pm \infty }p(x)= 2 $

Exercice 2

  1. $ \begin{aligned}\lim _{x\rightarrow +\infty }x=+\infty \\ \\ \lim _{x\rightarrow +\infty }\text{e}^{x}=+\infty \end{aligned} $

    donc par produit :

    $ \lim _{x\rightarrow +\infty }f(x)=+\infty $
  2. $ \begin{aligned}\lim _{x\rightarrow +\infty }x=+\infty \\ \\ \lim _{x\rightarrow +\infty }\text{e}^{x}=+\infty \end{aligned} $

    donc par somme :

    $ \lim _{x\rightarrow +\infty }g(x)=+\infty $
  3. $ \begin{aligned} \\ \lim _{x\rightarrow +\infty }\text{e}^{x}=+\infty \\ \\ \lim _{x\rightarrow +\infty }x^2=+\infty \\ \\ \lim _{x\rightarrow +\infty } - 1= - 1\\ \end{aligned} $
    donc par somme :

    $ \lim _{x\rightarrow +\infty }h(x)=+\infty $

Exercice 3

Limites en $ \pm \infty $ :

$ \begin{aligned}f\left( x\right) &=\dfrac{3x - 1}{x - 1}\\ \\ &=\dfrac{x\left( 3 - \dfrac{1}{x}\right) }{x\left( 1 - \dfrac{1}{x}\right) }\\ \\ &=\dfrac{3 - \dfrac{1}{x}}{1 - \dfrac{1}{x}}\end{aligned} $

Lorsque $ x $ tend vers $ \pm \infty $, le numérateur tend vers $ 3 $ et le dénominateur tend vers $ 1 $ ; donc par quotient $ \lim _{x\rightarrow \pm \infty }f\left( x\right) =3 $

Limites à gauche en $ 1 $ :

Lorsque $ x $ tend vers $ 1 $ en étant inférieur à $ 1 $ :
$ \lim_{\scriptsize\begin{matrix} x\rightarrow 1 \\ x <1 \end{matrix}}3x - 1=2 $

$ \lim _{\scriptsize\begin{matrix} x\rightarrow 1 \\ x <1 \end{matrix}}x - 1=0 $ et $ x - 1 $ est négatif

donc par quotient :

$ \lim _{\scriptsize\begin{matrix} x\rightarrow 1 \\ x <1 \end{matrix}}f(x)= - \infty $

Limites à droite en $ 1 $ :

Lorsque $ x $ tend vers $ 1 $ en étant supérieur à $ 1 $ :
$ \lim _{\scriptsize\begin{matrix} x\rightarrow 1 \\ x >1 \end{matrix}}3x - 1=2 $

$ \lim _{\scriptsize\begin{matrix} x\rightarrow 1 \\ x >1 \end{matrix}}x - 1=0 $ et $ x - 1 $ est positif

par quotient :

$ \lim _{\scriptsize\begin{matrix} x\rightarrow 1 \\ x >1 \end{matrix}}f(x)=+\infty $

De ces résultats, on en déduit que la courbe représentative de $ f $ admet :

  • une asymptote horizontale d'équation $ y=3 $
  • une asymptote verticale d'équation $ x=1 $

Exercice 4

  1. $ f $ est une fonction polynôme donc elle est dérivable sur $ \mathbb{R} $ et  : $ f^{\prime}(x)=3x^2 - 2x - 1 $

    $ f^{\prime} $ est une fonction polynôme du second degré qui a une racine évidente $ x_1=1 $. Le produit des racines vaut $ \dfrac{ c }{ a } = - \dfrac{ 1 }{ 3 } $ donc $ x_2= - \dfrac{ 1 }{ 3 } $ (on peut aussi calculer $ x_1 $ et $ x_2 $ avec le discriminant mais c'est plus long ...). $ f^{\prime} $ est du signe de $ a(=3) $ donc positif à l'extérieur des racines et négatif entre les racines.

    On en déduit le tableau de variations suivant :

    Tableau de variations partiel de f

    Ce tableau sera complété par la suite.

  2. Pour tout $ x \neq 0 $ : $ f\left( x\right) =x^{3}\left( 1 - \dfrac{1}{x} - \dfrac{1}{x^{2}}+\dfrac{1}{x^{3}}\right) $.

    Donc, en suivant un raisonnement analogue à celui des exercices précédents, par produit :
    $ \lim _{x\rightarrow - \infty }f\left( x\right) = - \infty $
    $ \lim _{x\rightarrow +\infty }f\left( x\right) =+\infty $
  3. On peut compléter le tableau précédent en ajoutant ces limites et en calculant $ f\left( - \dfrac{1}{3}\right) =\dfrac{32}{27} $ et $ f(1) = 0 $

    Tableau de variations complet de f

Exercice 5

Déterminer les limites suivantes :

  1. $ \lim_{x\rightarrow 2}\dfrac{x^{2} - 4}{x - 2} $
    On a une forme indéterminée du type « $ \dfrac{ 0 }{ 0 } $ ».
    On lève l'indétermination en factorisant le numérateur (identité remarquable) et en simplifiant.

    $ \dfrac{x^{2} - 4}{x - 2}=\dfrac{\left( x - 2\right) \left( x+2\right) }{x - 2}=x+2 $

    Ainsi :
    $ \lim_{x\rightarrow 2}\dfrac{x^{2} - 4}{x - 2} = 2+2=4 $
  2. $ \lim _{x\rightarrow 0}\dfrac{x^{3} - x}{x^{3}+x} $
    On a, ici aussi, une forme indéterminée du type « $ \dfrac{ 0 }{ 0 } $ ».
    On lève l'indétermination en factorisant $ x $ au numérateur et au dénominateur puis en simplifiant.
    (Remarque : mettre $ x^3 $ en facteur ne fonctionnerait pas ici ; en règle générale, on met le terme de plus haut degré en facteur pour une forme indéterminée du type « $ \dfrac{ \infty }{ \infty } $ » ou du type « $ + \infty - \infty $ »).

    $ \dfrac{x^{3} - x}{x^{3}+x}=\dfrac{x\left( x^{2} - 1\right) }{x\left( x^{2}+1\right) }=\dfrac{x^{2} - 1}{x^{2}+1} $

    Par conséquent :

    $ \lim _{x\rightarrow 0}\dfrac{x^{3} - x}{x^{3}+x}=\lim _{x\rightarrow 0}\dfrac{x^{2} - 1}{x^{2}+1} =\dfrac{0^{2} - 1}{0^{2}+1}= - 1 $
  3. $ \lim _{x\rightarrow 1}\dfrac{\sqrt{x} - 1}{x - 1} $ C'est, encore une fois, une forme indéterminée du type « $ \dfrac{ 0 }{ 0 } $ ».
    Il y a plusieurs méthode pour lever l'indétermination.
    On peut notamment multiplier le numérateur et le dénominateur par $ \sqrt{ x } +1 $ :

    Pour tout $ x \geqslant 0 $ et différent de 1 :

    $ \begin{aligned}\dfrac{\sqrt{x} - 1}{x - 1}&=\dfrac{\left( \sqrt{x} - 1\right) \left( \sqrt{x}+1\right) }{\left( x - 1\right) \left( \sqrt{x}+1\right) }\\ \\ &=\dfrac{x - 1}{ \left( x - 1\right) \left( \sqrt{x}+1\right)} \\ \\ &=\dfrac{1}{\sqrt{x}+1}\end{aligned} $

    On a alors :

    $ \lim _{x\rightarrow 1}\dfrac{\sqrt{x} - 1}{x - 1}=\lim _{x\rightarrow 1}\dfrac{1}{\sqrt{x}+1} =\dfrac{1}{\sqrt{1}+1}=\dfrac{1}{2} $

    (Pour une autre méthode voir la fiche : Calculer une limite à l'aide du nombre dérivé.)
